Not everyone can go out and buy the latest hybrid model. However, you can learn how to easily increase your gas mileage with your current car. Driving well and taking good care of your vehicle are all it takes to go further on a tank of gas.

    Drive the speed limit. Experts estimate that you lose 20 cents for every 5 mph (8.0 km/h) you go over the highway speed limit.

    Use your vehicle's cruise control for highway driving. The cruise control keeps the accelerator even and prevents sudden surges from stepping on the gas.
        Cruise control won't work in favor of your gas mileage if you live in a mountainous area, as the accelerator will be constantly surging going up frequent steep hills.

    Shut the car off if you'll be idling for longer than 15-30 seconds.

    Drive moderately and don't rev the engine. Anticipate having to stop and slow down way ahead of traffic.

    Change your oil regularly and rotate or replace your tires when needed. A dirty air filter or worn-out spark plugs can also seriously drain your gas mileage and should be fixed or replaced

Most cars with automatic transmissions are not equipped with a tachometer, since a tachometer is mostly used to indicate visually when it's time to shift gears. If your car doesn't have one, it's a good way to keep an eye on your engine speed. See Step 1 for more information. Getting Started 1 Get a tachometer and splicing connectors. You can either buy a tachometer new, which usually run somewhere between $30 and $50, or salvage on old one for relatively cheap and install it into your car.
